Biography

DermDX® New England, a Sonic Healthcare dermatopathology practice is privileged to include Margaret Choy Merola, M.D., Ph.D., as a member of our medical staff. Dr. Merola has extensive professional experience with an impressive academic background.

Dr. Merola graduated magna cum laude from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York with a bachelor’s degree in molecular and cellular biology. She then received both her medical degree and her Ph.D. in developmental genetics from the New York University School of Medicine in New York City. After an internal medicine internship at the Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, she went on to complete a three-year anatomic pathology residency at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital of the Harvard Medical School. Subsequently, she completed a dermatopathology fellowship at the same institution.

During her postgraduate training, Dr. Merola actively taught medical students and professionals at Harvard University and CME conferences. She also participated in several research projects each lasting two years or more. Upon concluding her medical education, she began serving as a staff dermatopathologist with DermDX New England, where she has worked since 2016.

Dr. Merola is a member of four professional medical organizations, including the American Society of Dermatopathology and the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology. She holds full medical licensure in the states of Florida, Massachusetts, Maine, and Rhode Island, and she is board certified in dermatopathology and anatomic pathology.

Dr. Merola has had the results of her research efforts published as abstracts and articles in peer-reviewed medical journals, and she has edited a dermatopathology textbook. She has also delivered many lectures and oral and poster presentations at universities and professional medical conferences.
